England v Austria – Stat Attack

England will hope to take another step towards booking their flight to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 when they face Austria in their latest qualifying match at The Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The Lionesses have collected maximum points from their four qualifying matches to date, scoring 32 goals and conceding zero in the process. Their latest opponents Austria are likely to be the toughest side which they will face in their qualifying campaign.

Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the statistics surrounding the fixture. Here are four facts which relate to England’s meeting with Austria.

Both sides like to attack

England have recorded 148 attempts on goal in qualifying so far, that’s an average of 37 attempts per game. Austria have recorded 128 goal attempts. Only Denmark have had more attempts on goal than England and Austria, that statistic suggests that there could be fireworks at The Stadium of Light this weekend.

Austria are more accurate with their shooting than England

While England are currently top of their qualification group, Austria have registered one shot more than the Lionesses on target in their four games. Austria have directed 50% of their shots on target whereas England have troubled the opposition goal with 43% of their efforts.

White’s England legacy started against Austria

England forward Ellen White goes into this weekend’s fixture just two goals short of equalling Kelly Smith’s record goalscoring haul of 46 for the Lionesses. A youthful White scored on her England debut against Austria at Loftus Road back in 2010. Is it written in the stars that the forward will reach that long-awaited goalscoring milestone against the same opponents at The Stadium of Light?

There is a scoreline trend when England meet Austria

England have won three of their last four meetings with Austria by a 3-0 scoreline. The Lionesses defeated the Austrians 3-0 in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011 qualifier before beating them by the same scoreline in international friendlies in 2017 and 2018.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifier between England and Austria at The Stadium of Light kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets for the match can be purchased by clicking here.
