Chelsea captain Eriksson keen to add Champions League trophy to quadruple

The UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy is the one piece of silverware missing from Chelsea’s trophy cabinet and captain Magda Eriksson says that she is keen to fill that void.

The Swedish international lifted the Vitality Women’s FA Cup trophy with The Blues at Wembley on Sunday and she will now lead the team out against Juventus on Wednesday evening as the club look to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The Champions League trophy is the one piece of silverware yet to be won by Eriksson and Chelsea but the player says that she is keen to end that long pursuit of European football’s greatest prize.

“You always want to go after the things that you haven’t won,” Eriksson said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “That’s always what motivates me, the things that I haven’t got.

“The Champions League is one of those things that has been a childhood dream for a lot of us players. We know that the Champions League is a special thing, the domestic treble is an amazing achievement but getting that European win would be amazing as well and is in the back of our minds, that’s the goal.”

Chelsea started their 2021/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with a rollercoaster 3-3 draw against VfL Wolfsburg at Kingsmeadow. Eriksson went on to express how pleased she is that the team have managed to learn from that game and win their next three European matches to move within touching distance of winning the group.

She said “We have grown as a team through this season and definitely conceding three goals in a game (against VfL Wolfsburg) is not something that we were happy about, it is not Chelsea standards.

“We spent a lot of time analysing our game at the back, how we can improve, how we can minimise giving the opposition anything for free and we really showed that we learnt from it. That is the mentality here at Chelsea and that is what I love about Chelsea – yes, you can make mistakes but the most important thing is how you learn from it, how you move on, show that you learn from it and stay humble.”

The UEFA Women’s Champions League group fixture between Chelsea and Juventus at Kingsmeadow kicks-off at 8pm on Wednesday evening. Tickets are now on general sale and can be purchased by clicking here. Fans who are unable to attend the match can stream the action live on DAZN.
