Chelsea held to frustrating goalless draw by Juventus

Juventus have held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Kingsmeadow this evening in the two clubs’ latest UEFA Women’s Champions League group match.

The hosts dominated throughout but were unable to find a way beyond Juventus keeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin along with the visitors’ stubborn defence.

Chelsea were in control from the first whistle as Juventus failed to really get going but The Blues were unable to find the back of the net. Erin Cuthbert saw an early effort pushed onto the crossbar by visiting keeper Peyraud-Magnin before a Sam Kerr cross also cannoned off the woodwork.

Kerr was soon involved again as she rounded Peyraud-Magnin but was forced too far wide to direct the ball into the empty net. The same player then headed a good chance wide before a Millie Bright rocket from range was pushed to safety by Peyraud-Magnin.

Juventus played deep in the first half and they were equally as defensive in the second period, allowing Chelsea the opportunity to build further attacks. Pernille Harder saw an early strike deflected wide before Kerr had an effort ruled out after she swept home a Fran Kirby pass from an offside position.

Chelsea piled pressure on Juventus in the closing stages with Kirby going closest to breaking the deadlock but it wasn’t to be their night as the game ended 0-0.

Emma Hayes’ side must now look to get a positive result against VfL Wolfsburg in their final group match in Germany next week to make sure of their qualification for the quarter-finals.
