Chelsea have been dumped out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League at the group stage after being beaten 4-0 by VfL Wolfsburg at the AOK Stadion this evening.
The Blues simply needed not to lose by more than one goal but they were carved wide open by their opponents on numerous occasions on a night which Emma Hayes’ side will want to quickly forget.
The hosts went close inside the first 10 minutes with Lena Oberdorf sending a vicious effort just wide. The She-Wolves didn’t have to wait long for their reward when Shanice van de Sanden’s effort was saved by Chelsea keeper Zecira Musovic but the ball trickled into the path of Svenja Huth who fired home from just six yards.
Huth would get hers and Wolfsburg’s second goal of the game seven minutes later when she struck from close range before Sam Kerr looped an ambitious effort onto the bar at the other end.
Chelsea’s best chance of the first half fell to substitute Ji So-yun moments after coming on. She advanced across the box with the ball but could only shoot straight at home keeper Almuth Schult when given a clear sight of goal.
Hayes’ side knew that they had to push for a goal early in the second half and Fran Kirby’s volley was well-held by Schult. The Blues’ hopes soon suffered another blow though when Huth’s prodded through ball found Tabea Wassmuth who placed her effort into the bottom corner.
Aniek Nouwen then saw a header hit the post as Chelsea searched for a way back into the game before Wassmuth thumped a shot into the roof of the net at the other end as she claimed her second goal and Wolfsburg’s fourth.
It could have got worse for Chelsea late on but Wassmuth spurned the opportunity to complete her hat-trick when she fired wide across goal before Musovic denied Oberdorf at the death.
Chelsea must now turn their focus towards domestic action with a Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against West Ham United at Kingsmeadow coming up on Sunday.
