Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that knocking VfL Wolfsburg out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on their own turf would be an amazing achievement.
The pair meet at the AOK Stadion this evening in their final match of the group stage. Chelsea simply need a positive result to advance while opponents Wolfsburg must win the game.
Chelsea made history in knocking Wolfsburg out last season over two legs on neutral territory in Budapest and Hayes believes that repeating that feat in Germany would be another great achievement for her side.
“It would be an amazing achievement by the team,” Hayes said. “I know that we have had some epic games over the years, not just last year’s but prior to that.
“I think we know that both teams are full of goals. For the people watching at home, it will be an entertaining game but for us, we must use all of our experience and all of our wisdom to make sure that the team takes care of the right details.
“We are looking forward to it, these are the games that we want to play in where teams come out against us.”
The game promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions for both sides but Hayes went on to say that she wouldn’t have it any other way.
She said “This is why we come to work everyday, we want to be playing in the Champions League, we want to be playing in these places. It is excitement but of course, with excitement comes all of the emotions around it. We have so much experience that the group know exactly what they need to do.”
The UEFA Women’s Champions League group fixture between VfL Wolfsburg and Chelsea kicks-off at 8pm. Chelsea fans from the UK are not permitted to attend the match, however, the game can be streamed live on DAZN.
