REWIND: Chelsea ease to UWCL victory over FC Rosengård in last-16 first leg at Kingsmeadow

The 2017/2018 season saw Chelsea participate in their third UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.

The Blues had beaten Bayern Munich on away goals in the last-32 and they were paired with Swedish club FC Rosengård in only their second-ever last-16 tie.

FAWSL Full-Time take a look back at the first leg of that last-16 encounter, a night which will be remembered fondly by Chelsea fans.

Chelsea went into the tie aiming to qualify for their first UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final. Emma Hayes’ side got off to a strong start as they pegged the visitors back into their own half. Defender Gilly Flaherty saw an effort cleared off the line early on before visiting keeper Zećira Mušović produced a string of impressive saves to deny Ramona Bachmann, Katie Chapman and Ji So-yun twice.

The Blues finally made the breakthrough just after the half-hour when Fran Kirby fired the ball into the far corner of the FC Rosengård net.

The visitors were better after the half-time interval and Simone Boye Sørensen was denied by Millie Bright before home keeper Hedvig Lindahl pulled off an excellent save.

Chelsea went 2-0 up 20 minutes into the second period when Ji played in Bachmann who kept her composure to slot the ball home beyond Mušović.

The Blues rounded-off the scoring seven minutes later through Flaherty. Kirby’s initial effort was blocked but the centre-back was there to fire the loose ball into the back of the net as Chelsea established a three-goal lead going into the second leg.

Chelsea went on to win the second leg in Sweden 1-0 as they advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory on aggregate. The Blues would go all the way to the semi-finals before being defeated 5-1 on aggregate by German club VfL Wolfsburg.
