Durham’s FA Women’s Championship fixture at Lewes has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 cases in The Wildcats’ squad combined with ongoing injuries.
Lee Sanders’ side were due to travel to The Dripping Pan on Sunday for their opening fixture of 2022, however, Durham have today confirmed that the game has been postponed.
The fixture is the first of this weekend’s scheduled FA Women’s Championship matches to be called-off as a result of the ongoing pandemic and the rise in infections due to the Omicron variant. Three games in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League have already been hit with the postponement of West Ham United’s home fixture against Manchester United having been quickly followed by the cancellation of Chelsea’s Friday night meeting with Tottenham Hotspur and Saturday’s fixture between Aston Villa and Everton.
In total, 40 positive COVID-19 cases were recorded in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship following the latest round of testing. That rate is one of the highest recorded throughout the pandemic so far. The Football Association have confirmed that they are continuing to work with clubs to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 within their squads and ensure that players, coaches and staff are kept safe.
A new date for the FA Women’s Championship fixture between Lewes and Durham will be agreed in due course.
