Arsenal trio Lydia Williams, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord are all in contention to pick up their 100th senior caps for Australia in the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™.
The trio have been selected in Australia head coach Tony Gustavsson’s final 21-player group for the tournament. The Commonwealth Bank Matildas boss will add two further players to his squad before the tournament kicks-off.
Arsenal defender Catley is currently on 96 senior international caps while club teammates Williams and Foord are on 95. Australia will face Indonesia, The Philippines and Thailand in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ group stage. Gustavsson’s side are the red hot favourites to win their group and they could play up to three more fixtures in the knockout stage if they do advance as expected.
Williams, Catley and Foord are set to link-up with Australia on Monday for a pre-tournament training camp in Dubai and the trio will therefore not be available for selection for Arsenal until their involvement at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ comes to an end. The earliest that the players may potentially return to England could be the first week of February.
Australia begin their AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022™ campaign with a group match against Indonesia in Mumbai on 21 January 2022.
