‘It’s about keeping the standards’ – Birmingham City have set the bar high says Carter

Birmingham City interim head coach Darren Carter says that his side must look to maintain their high standards when they travel to the Leigh Sports Village to face Manchester United this afternoon.

The Blues recorded a huge shock last weekend when they defeated Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders Arsenal at St Andrew’s.

That victory was Birmingham City’s first this season. The Blues very much led from the front and defended for their lives against The Gunners and interim head coach Carter is calling for the same high standards this afternoon.

“It’s the old cliché, you take one game at a time,” Carter said when speaking in his pre-match press conference. “For Manchester United, it is about different threats, different problems to solve and we have got to come up with a game plan that is going to ask questions of them.

“For the girls and the team, it is a massive confidence booster that they have gone up against a quality side like Arsenal and seen the rewards that they can get for their hard work. It is all about keeping those standards now, we have set the benchmark for ourselves and raised a few eyebrows in the process.

“That’s the challenge for us now, we have got to meet those higher expectations.”

Last weekend’s maiden victory lifted Birmingham City off the bottom of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table but Carter is still expecting a dogfight between now and the end of the season.

He said “It is going to be that way (a battle) between now and the end of the season. Leicester are going to fight as hard as we are and there are teams above us who we want to try and set our sights on.

“It is what it is, we are not naive enough to think it is going to be easy or four of five teams are going to be involved, we’ve got to take each game as it comes, focus on ourselves and hope that other things around us go our way.”

Birmingham City’s latest Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at midday.
