Arsenal goalkeeper Lydia Williams says that Australia must go out and set a marker for the rest of the tournament when they open their AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 campaign against Indonesia on Friday.
Williams is a member of Australian head coach Tony Gustavsson’s 23-player squad for the tournament with the player possibly in-line to collect her 96th senior cap in Mumbai.
When speaking to Football Australia Media ahead of The Commonwealth Bank Matildas’ tournament opener against Indonesia, Williams said that her team must look to set the standard.
“It’s the first game, you want to go out there and really make your mark,” Williams said. “We must go out there and put in a performance which sets the tone for the remainder of the tournament.
“We are all really excited to get out there and get up and running.”
Williams is one of the oldest players in the Australia squad and she first featured in an AFC Women’s Asian Cup way back in 2006. The keeper went on to say that even now it still feels extra special to represent her country.
She said “It is an honour every time I represent the team and every time I’m part of the group. It is just exciting that it is another tournament that I’m a part of and we get to go out there and make history and be the best that we can be.
“I’m looking forward to getting out there on the pitch with the girls and playing some games.”
Australia’s opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 fixture against Indonesia kicks-off at 10am UK time on Friday.
