‘It’s good to build new momentum’ – Vasseur pleased with Everton’s victory in Huddersfield

Everton manager Jean-Luc Vasseur says that this afternoon’s 4-0 Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round victory at Huddersfield Town can be the start of new momentum to be built by his side.

The Blue Girls have stuttered this season with results having a damaging impact on the team’s confidence. Despite their poor run of form, Everton had no problem with defeating third tier opponents in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round this afternoon, easing to a simple victory over a Huddersfield Town side who were playing in-front of a record crowd at The John Smith’s Stadium.

When speaking to the media after the match, Vasseur said that the game has provided his side with the opportunity to build new momentum which he hopes will transition over into the club’s form in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

“It was important to win and it was important to score the goals,” Vasseur said. “It was important to start well and break the bad momentum and we can now begin to build good momentum.

“We have to congratulate Huddersfield because they tried to be resolute and the goalkeeper in the first half made a lot of saves and one at the end. We have to credit our opponents for their performance.”

Vasseur has often highlighted a lack of confidence for Everton’s problems so far in his tenure. The Frenchman explained that the Huddersfield Town fixture can almost act as a pre-season game to get Everton’s campaign back on track.

He said “It was like when you start pre-season and you play against some lower division teams to score and win and build confidence. It was important to win today and we must now keep winning.”

Everton took the lead after just four minutes when Anna Anvegård guided the ball home from a Kenza Dali cross. Vasseur said that scoring early had both advantages and disadvantages.

“It was good and not good (scoring early), I think that we lost some of the rhythm,” said Vasseur. “Yes, the goalkeeper made some good saves but I think that by the end of the first half, we should have maybe scored four. We scored one goal and then had to wait until just before half-time for another but that’s football.”

Everton are back in action again next Sunday when Reading are the visitors to Walton Hall Park for a Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture.
