Aston Villa defender Ewers announces retirement

Aston Villa defender Marisa Ewers has confirmed her retirement from playing at the age of 32 according to reports on the club’s official website.

The Hamburg-born defender joined The Villans in 2019 and played all 14 matches for the club as they won the FA Women’s Championship title on a points per game basis in her first season in claret and blue.

Ewers was quickly handed the Aston Villa captaincy and she added a further 19 league outings to her tally in 2020/2021 as the club won their battle for a second season of Barclays FA Women’s Super League football. The defender has made five league appearances for Aston Villa this season but she has now called time on her career. It has been reported that Ewers will work in an off-field role at Aston Villa for the remainder of the season, supporting head coach Carla Ward as a member of her backroom staff.

Speaking after announcing her decision to retire, Ewers said “The club means so much to me, I’ve had really good times with this team and this club.

“When I look back, I am very grateful for what I have experienced here and for the future opportunity which the club have given me.”

Ewers ends her playing career having enjoyed spells with Hamburger SV, Bayer Leverkusen, Birmingham City and Aston Villa.
