Wiegman confirms that England will make changes against Spain

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has confirmed that she will make changes to her starting XI for the match against Spain.

The Lionesses face the Spaniards at Norwich City’s Carrow Road tomorrow in their second match at the Arnold Clark Cup. Both sides drew their opening matches at the tournament 1-1 with England being held by Canada and Spain being denied three points by Germany.

England boss Wiegman fielded a familiar starting line-up against Canada on Thursday but she has indicated that there will be changes made to the side which will take on Spain tomorrow.

“Yes, there will be some changes,” Wiegman confirmed when speaking in her pre-match press conference. “As we said before the start of this cup, we have the opportunity to try out some new things because we have three games in seven days.

“We want to see some new things, develop our style of play and we want to see combinations of players together to see how they connect. Tomorrow, we will have that opportunity so we will make some changes.”

Just one place separates England and Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings and Wiegman was complimentary of the work which the Lionesses’ opponents have done in recent years to climb into the world’s top 10.

She said “They have developed very well. They have a lot of Barcelona players in the squad who are very tactical and technical. They tied the first game but before that, they had done very well, they had won a lot of games.

“We are very aware of their threats but we feel that we will have opportunities to harm them too.”

England’s Arnold Clark Cup match against Spain in Norwich kicks-off at 3.15pm tomorrow afternoon.
