Manchester City upset the odds to defeat Chelsea in Conti Cup final

Manchester City have regained the FA Women’s Continental League Cup with a surprise 3-1 victory over Chelsea at The Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon this evening.

Emma Hayes’ Blues established a first half lead through Sam Kerr but a Caroline Weir brace, either side of an Ellen White goal, secured the silverware for Manchester City.

There was little to separate the two sides in a hard-fought opening. When the first chance came, it was  Manchester City who should have been in-front but Lauren Hemp could only fire the ball against the post from a Georgia Stanway cross.

Chelsea then broke the deadlock when a long cross from Guro Reiten was fumbled by Manchester City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck and Kerr guided the ball home on the turn.

Manchester City levelled matters early in the second half when Stanway picked out Weir in the box who steered the ball beyond Ann-Katrin Berger and into the back of the Chelsea net.

At the other end, Niamh Charles forced a wonderful save from Roebuck before Manchester City took the lead for the first time when Berger failed to claim a Hemp delivery and White bundled in at the near post.

Despite leading 2-1, The Cityzens did not sit on their slender advantage and they soon grabbed a third goal. Stanway’s corner found Lucy Bronze at the back post who headed the ball into the path of Weir, the Scotland international volleying home from the centre of the goal.

White had a couple of further chances to extend Manchester City’s lead but the scoreline ended 3-1 as The Citizens regained the FA Women’s Continental League Cup three years on from last lifting the trophy.
