Birmingham City have to keep believing until the end says Carter ahead of Arsenal fixture

Birmingham City’s interim boss Darren Carter says that his side have to keep believing that Barclays FA Women’s Super League survival is possible while points remain available.

The Blues are now eight points adrift with just seven games remaining. The club’s hopes of being a top flight outfit next season are fading and the challenge gets no easier this afternoon with the Blues facing a trip to league leaders Arsenal.

Speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the match, Birmingham City’s interim boss Carter said that his side must keep believing that they can complete ‘The Great Escape’ while there are games left to play and points to collect.

“We know the challenge ahead, it has been pretty much the same since I came through the door,” Carter said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The belief is still there, obviously we know that we have points and ground to make up.

“While there are points on the board and games to be played and we can mathematically do it, we will continue to fight. The squad are in good spirits and they are ready to fight.”

Playing Arsenal away from home is a daunting task and Carter said that his side will need to be very strategical with their game plan, although he stopped short of labelling the plan ugly.

He said “Since I came in, I’ve always been an advocate for the team playing how I played and how football should be played, you want to see free-flowing and build from the back football.

“You have to play to your strengths and play effective football so I don’t like the word ugly, it gets banded about a little bit, but it’s effective football. Even if some teams go direct and play balls into certain areas, it’s effective football for me, it’s winning football if you are winning games, it’s effective football.

“It is what we will look to do because we have got to win games and put points on the board. Is it going to be pretty? No, not at times but we want to be effective.”

Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at Arsenal kicks-off at 12pm.
