Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that her side must begin to convert their good performances into points ahead of this weekend’s fixture at Chelsea in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
The Villans have played well in recent matches against Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion but they have come away with no points.
Ahead of this weekend’s match at Chelsea, Aston Villa boss Ward has highlighted the fact that good performances must result in her side putting points on the board.
“I’m ambitious, I want to kick on and every point matters,” Ward said when speaking in her pre-match press conference. “Whilst we are safe, the reality of it is that we want to kick on. As an ambitious group of staff and an ambitious group of players, we want to get as many points as possible, it doesn’t matter that it’s Chelsea, we will be targeting points because we want points in every game, that’s the mentality of our group.
“We’ve dominated possession of every game since Christmas including Chelsea in the FA Cup, we have dominated the ball against every single opponent. We have to now be clinical, we have to tidy up on those details in the final third and convert performances into points because it’s a points game, it’s a points business.
“We will not just be going there to make up the numbers, we will be going there to make a game of it and try to get some points.”
Aston Villa are currently in ninth position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table and Ward said that her side are on target for a successful season.
She said “Anything from ninth above is a successful season but I’m hungry for more than that, we want to keep improving, we want to get better. We have to stick to our principles, our DNA of what we want to do because ultimately, that is not going to change next season.
“We have to keep working, we have to be almost obsessed with getting more points on the board. Every single one of us wants that, nobody likes defeats and last week was tough so everybody is ready to go again. There is a good energy across the group and a belief across the group that we can go there and give them a game and we will certainly try and do that.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday.
