Significant increase to Vitality Women’s FA Cup prize money announced

The Football Association have this afternoon confirmed a significant increase in Vitality Women’s FA Cup prize money from next season.

FAWSL Full-Time have been informed via an official press release that the competition’s prize fund will receive a £3 million per year uplift from the 2022/2023 season.

The increased funds will be split across each round of the competition, providing benefit to both elite and non-elite participants. The Football Association are yet to determine how the funds will be split, however, they are committed to providing real financial benefit to those clubs competing in the early stages of the competition.

Today’s news comes after years of campaigns staged throughout the women’s game for an increase in Vitality Women’s FA Cup prize money. Current prize money does not sufficiently reflect the stature of the competition and those teams participating in it and is a very small fraction of the prize fund of the men’s Emirates FA Cup.

Speaking following today’s announcement, Sue Campbell, Director of Women’s Football at The Football Association, said “I’m delighted to be able to make this announcement of increased funding for the Vitality Women’s FA Cup because it’s going to benefit so many clubs across the women’s football pyramid.

“The FA Cup, whether men’s or women’s, is the biggest and best domestic cup competition in the world, and this increased investment from The FA highlights that we want clubs competing in it to be rewarded, while also highlighting our ongoing commitment to the women’s game.

“Women’s football continues to be in a growth phase and we are always looking to make improvements and investment to drive it forward and break new boundaries. This is certainly one of the most pleasing during my time with the organisation, because I know it means so much to so many.”

The 2021/2022 Vitality Women’s FA Cup continues this weekend with the four quarter-final ties being played.
