Birmingham City’s interim boss Carter reiterates aim to change club’s direction

Birmingham City’s interim head coach Darren Carter has reiterated his desire to change the club’s fortunes during his time in charge at St Andrew’s.

Carter continues to work in his role on a temporary basis but he is very much looking at the long term picture for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s bottom club.

Birmingham City travel to Chelsea for a Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie this weekend and ahead of that match, Carter said that he is confident of turning the fortunes of the Blues around along with people’s perceptions of the club.

“It’d mean a great deal (to reach a semi-final), it has been a turbulent last few years,” Carter said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time. “The trajectory of this team has been on the decline and we are going to change that 100%.

“To get to a semi-final of a competition that this team has obviously won in recent history would mean a lot and it would really give us a boost in what has been a difficult season.

“We will be ready to go there, be brave, give a right good account of ourselves and try and win the game.”

Carter is well-aware of the huge task which his side face this weekend. When speaking about opponents Chelsea, the Birmingham City boss was full of praise for their achievements over the years.

He said “They are a fabulous side and they’re a joy to watch, not so much to play against. Emma (Hayes) has done an unbelievable job over the years and they are a successful team for a reason. They are very effective in terms of they will always find ways to win games, they are not afraid for it to be chaotic, they can be expansive and play so they find ways and that’s the sign of champions.

“We know that everything that we did well in the West Ham game will need to be replicated across the board and that’s the only way that you are going to get anything against Chelsea. We’ve prepared and planned as we always do and it’s a cup game, there’s a chance to get into the semi-finals at the end of the day. Like any cup competition, you have to come up against some big teams eventually and this is our chance to go toe-to-toe and give them a right good game.”

Birmingham City’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Chelsea kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday.
