Tottenham Hotspur forward Kyah Simon says that Australia must be more clinical when they meet New Zealand in a second international friendly match in Canberra on Tuesday.
The Commonwealth Bank Matildas came from behind to defeat the Ford Football Ferns 2-1 in the first match in Townsville, Queensland on Friday. Tony Gustavsson’s side needed two second half injury time goals to seal their comeback.
Australia had 37 attempts on goal in that game and ahead of their latest meeting with New Zealand, forward Simon says that the team must be more clinical.
“In the first game, we created 25 chances in the first half so we know that we are creating chances but it is about capitalising, being clinical and finishing those chances,” Simon said when speaking to Football Australia.
“If we can keep creating that number of chances, we can look to capitalise and hopefully, score some more goals earlier in the game this time around.”
Despite taking 93 minutes to find the back of the net on Friday, Simon did see positives to take from the attacking side of Australia’s game.
She said “It was nice to have some controlled possession and to create a variety of chances in the final third. As strikers or a front five or six, it is our responsibility to finish them off.
“If we can be a little bit more clinical in this game and perform like we know we can, we will hopefully be in a good position to get a convincing result.”
Australia’s international friendly against New Zealand in Canberra kicks-off at 10.45am (UK time) on Tuesday.
