England forward Lauren Hemp hailed the quality of her teammates after netting a brace in a 5-0 victory over Northern Ireland in Belfast last night.
Hemp netted the first and third goals in England’s latest victory. The player has so often performed well but not got the goals to match her performance, however, last night’s showing was very much the complete package.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Hemp deflected any praise put on herself to those players in the team who performed well around her, issuing a special mention to Ella Toone.
“I’m pleased that I scored, the main thing for me is creating chances,” Hemp said. “I’ve done that recently but it’s the people around me that help. Having Tooney is unbelievable, having that talent around you makes it a lot easier for yourself.
“I’m pleased to have picked up a couple of goals, it doesn’t happen often (for England), but I’ll take it when I can.”
England are now just a point away from qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 while the home EUROs is on the horizon. Hemp went on to say that it is an exciting time to be an England player.
She said “It is a process and we are getting close to qualification so it is important that we kick on now towards the summer.
“It is exciting to see that we have got a great group of girls and the depth in the squad is unbelievable. It’s exciting to see what the future holds for us but we are on the right track.”
Hemp now returns to Manchester City where she will swiftly prepare for Saturday’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final tie at West Ham United.
