Chelsea record excellent victory at Arsenal to reach Women’s FA Cup final

Vitality Women’s FA Cup holders Chelsea have qualified for this season’s final after defeating Arsenal 2-0 at the LV Bet Stadium in Boreham Wood this afternoon.

Following a first half stalemate, Guro Reiten and Ji So-Yun scored for The Blues in the second period as they set up a Wembley meeting with Manchester City in next month’s final.

The first half was a battle with chances being at an absolute premium. Vivianne Miedema blasted a shot high and wide for Arsenal before Beth England and Niamh Charles both fired efforts at home keeper Manuela Zinsberger at the other end.

Arsenal were inches away from breaking the deadlock early in the second half. Beth Mead found the ball at her feet in the box and she struck an effort across goal on the turn which went ever so narrowly wide. The Gunners were made to rue that miss as Chelsea went straight up the other end and scored. Reiten took aim from 20 yards and she expertly found the top corner of the Arsenal net.

Zinsberger was then required to get down to push an England effort round the post before Ji made it 2-0 to The Blues, the South Korean international firing home via the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Chelsea went close to scoring a third when their high press forced Arsenal to give away cheap possession. Sophie Ingle saw a vicious effort pushed away by Zinsberger before Ji scuffed the rebound wide of goal. England then saw a shot go narrowly over the bar in the closing stages as the game ended 2-0 to the visitors.

The 2021/2022 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final between Manchester City and Chelsea will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 15 May 2022.
