‘We haven’t won anything’ – Chelsea must remain grounded for Spurs says Hayes

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that her side must remain grounded despite being top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table.

The Blues are one point clear of second-placed Arsenal, however, the South West Londoners have the opportunity to extend their advantage to four points with victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Kingsmeadow this evening.

Chelsea are a maximum of three wins away from retaining the league title but manager Hayes says that her side must not get carried away with their current league position.

“It is about reminding ourselves that we haven’t achieved anything yet, yes, we are in the driving seat but we haven’t won anything,” Hayes said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We need to keep our feet on the floor and we need to keep grafting to make sure that we are ready for Tottenham. I know that they provided a really stern test for us (on Sunday) and I expect the same in the latest match.

“The team need to remain humble with what we are doing and make sure that in our training detail, we apply ourselves in the best possible way because at this stage of the season, getting over the line requires real detail, diligence and application of the game plan. We have to enforce that as much as possible because the win (at Spurs) at the weekend was just a win.”

In the reverse fixture at Spurs on Sunday, Chelsea had to come from behind to win 3-1. Hayes went on to say that she wants her side to apply the game plan better when the two sides meet again at Kingsmeadow this evening.

She said “I’d love us to execute the game plan, I didn’t feel that we played very well, they initially won the midfield battle and I thought we didn’t move the ball well enough out from the back.

“Tottenham are a great team, she (Rehanne Skinner) has done really well there, they took us all the way (on Sunday) and were really tough to beat.”

Chelsea’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Spurs at Kingsmeadow kicks-off at 7.45pm this evening.
