Birmingham City will take a measured approach to stopping ‘relentless’ Chelsea – Carter

Birmingham City will look to balance their defensive duties and attacking qualities in a bid to get a positive result against Chelsea says interim head coach Darren Carter.

The Blues take on the Barclays FA Women’s Super League leaders at St Andrew’s on Sunday evening. Birmingham City are in desperate need of points with the club in deep relegation trouble at the bottom of the table.

If Carter’s side are to have any chance of survival, they will need to take points from either Chelsea or Manchester City in their next two matches and hope that Leicester City are beaten by Reading.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of this weekend’s meeting with the South West Londoners, Carter said that his side will need to take a balanced approach to the game.

“The million dollar question is how you beat an Arsenal, a Chelsea, a City,” Carter said. “Chelsea are relentless at the moment, they’ve got such a fantastic way of finding ways to win football matches. They are not set on playing one way, if they need to find different ways or tactics to win a game, they’ll do it. That’s all down to Emma (Hayes), she continues to be a serial winner.

“That’s the question – how do you stop them and first, limit what they do and their quality then how do you hurt them going forward? We’ve prepared and planned as we always do, we’ve looked at different ways that we can do that and we are in a position now where we have got to win games to get points.

“It’s all or nothing for us but not in a way that we will be firing forward left, right and centre, we are going to do it in a measured way and hopefully, we will be able to be successful with it.”

At evening kick-off at St Andrew’s means that Birmingham City’s relegation rivals Leicester City will have already played their game. Carter said that his side are prepared for whatever is the outcome of that match.

He said “We’ve got a couple of scenarios, a couple of game plans in place for how results play out on Sunday but either way, it is clear what we need to do. If Leicester win or draw then it changes but if they lose, we can maybe tweak it a little bit, it is just how the end of the season is. Top and bottom, results can affect different scenarios but we will be ready either way.”

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Birmingham City and Chelsea kicks-off at 6.45pm on Sunday evening.
