London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips says that Sunday’s FA Women’s Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers is her side’s biggest game of the year.
The Pride will seal a second-place finish in the FA Women’s Championship with a win or if they better the results of both Bristol City and Crystal Palace.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the match, Phillips said that the Blackburn Rovers game is her side’s biggest game of the year, although that is the approach that London City Lionesses take to every game.
“The next game is the biggest game of the year for us and that is always the case,” Phillips said. “Whatever is the next game is always going to be the biggest game.”
London City Lionesses will be the favourites to emerge from Sunday’s game with three points but Phillips is wary of Blackburn Rovers’ threats.
She said “You have to beat the teams that you should beat on paper to earn yourself that top spot and championships in years to come. It’ll be a true test for our girls and having watched them (Blackburn Rovers), they are an incredibly scrappy opposition, very transitional and they have adopted a different style in recent weeks, switching from four to five at the back.
“They’ve got some really dangerous threats up top with Jordan and Crompton. They’ve had bad luck with injuries and I know they are a very gritty team who will want to bounce back from a defeat against Charlton last weekend. It is going to pose some challenges and we have to go out and focus on our performance as we always do. I think it will be about finding an early goal in this game.”
London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers at Princes Park kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday.
