Long-serving Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Aileen Whelan has announced that she will be leaving the club after tomorrow’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Everton.
The 30-year-old has been a Brighton & Hove Albion player for the last five years, helping the club make the successful step up to the top flight from the old FA Women’s Super League 2.
Whelan announced her Brighton & Hove Albion departure this evening via a post on her personal Twitter account.
She said “Tomorrow marks the final time that I’ll be pulling on a Brighton shirt. I’ve had the best five years here and made friends and memories that I’ll treasure forever. This decision is one of the toughest I’ve ever had to make and I thank everyone at Brighton for believing in me and helping me grow both as a player and as a person.
“Thank you to the fans for always turning up through the good, the bad and the ugly, you don’t know how much us girls appreciate it.
“One last game, let’s get the three points and finish on a high.”
Whelan has made an astonishing 96 league appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion across two divisions while she has scored 20 goals. In addition to Brighton & Hove Albion, Whelan can also count Everton and Notts County amongst her former clubs.
The player will have the opportunity to say goodbye to the fans with Brighton & Hove Albion’s final fixture of the season being a home game at The People’s Pension Stadium.
