West Ham United announce departure of manager Harder with Konchesky stepping up

West Ham United have this evening confirmed that manager Olli Harder is leaving the club and will be replaced by Paul Konchesky.

The Hammers broke the news via an update on their official club website. It is understood that Harder is moving on to pursue new opportunities while Konchesky was offered the role after impressing as his assistant. The former Hammers defender has signed an initial two-year deal as manager.

New Zealander Harder has turned West Ham United’s fortunes around in his 17 months at the club, helping The Hammers avoid relegation to the FA Women’s Championship last season before guiding them to a first top half of the table finish this term. He leaves West Ham United with a stronger core of players and a distinct playing style which new boss Konchesky may wish to build upon.

After his departure was confirmed, Harder said “I am proud and honoured to have had the opportunity to work for West Ham United and share this experience with our amazing staff, players and of course, incredible fans. Having reached a Conti Cup quarter-final, an FA Cup semi-final and earned more points this season than in any WSL season in the club’s history, I believe I’m leaving the club in a really good place. I am sure that if it continues to build on this platform of success, the future is bright.”

Harder’s final game in charge saw West Ham United go down 2-0 to Arsenal at The Chigwell Construction Stadium this afternoon.
