Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Brooks signs new deal

Blackburn Rovers have today announced that goalkeeper Alex Brooks will remain with the club for the 2022/2023 season with the player penning a new contract.

The 27-year-old registered 26 appearances in all competitions this season, establishing herself as a crucial member of the side since her return to the club in 2020. Her second spell with the Lancashire club has thus far proved a successful one as Brooks has cemented her place as Gemma Donnelly’s number one.

Although their maiden campaign in the FA Women’s Championship in 2019/2020 saw Rovers finish comfortably in mid-table before the season was brought to an abrupt end, the Lancashire club have somewhat struggled in the second tier since then. Ninth and tenth-place finishes in back-to-back years have meant that Donnelly’s team have narrowly avoided relegation on both occasions, a significant drop off from their impressive outing in their first season.

The 2022/2023 FA Women’s Championship campaign promises to be the most competitive yet with Birmingham City dropping down into the league, one strong third tier side being promoted and many other established teams in the second tier set to invest again. The retention of a goalkeeper as adept as Brooks is integral to ensuring that Rovers’ FA Women’s Championship status remains intact beyond next season.
