Arsenal midfielder Nobbs ruled out of UEFA Women’s EURO with injury

Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs is set to miss this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO with the player still nursing a knee injury.

The 29-year-old sustained the injury whilst playing for her club towards the end of the season. Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall was unable to confirm whether the player would be fit for the UEFA Women’s EURO, however, The Football Association have today confirmed that Nobbs has been ‘ruled out for the summer’.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman named her initial 28-player squad for the UEFA Women’s EURO this afternoon with Nobbs being the notable absentee. The door has been left open for Manchester City defender Steph Houghton to return should she prove her fitness while Chloe Kelly has been handed a recall. Sandy MacIver, Jill Scott, Fran Kirby and Lucy Staniforth have also made the cut.

The Lionesses squad will report for duty at St George’s Park on Monday 30 May for a three-day preparation period before regrouping again on Monday 6 June for a further five days. The squad will then begin their preparations from Monday 13 June for their pre-tournament triple-header against Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland. England are set to face the first two of those opponents on home soil.

Following the initial squad announcement, England boss Wiegman said “The EUROs are getting closer, and this is a big step towards the tournament. We have a settled squad and I know we have players in our team that will give everything to make it a summer to remember.

“It is important the players have the chance to get some rest now after a very busy season before we get back to our work. We then have a series of prep camps coming up and it is important we use this time to build an even closer connection on and off the pitch.

“We also look forward to welcoming those who have been working individually and with their clubs on their fitness in the past few weeks. We are hoping to have them back on the pitch when the series of pre-camps start, so we can see where they are at.”

Wiegman must name her final 23-player squad for this summer’s tournament by UEFA’s deadline of 10.59pm on Sunday 26 June. Teams will be able to make further changes prior to their first tournament match in the event of serious injury or illness.
