Liverpool welcomed by thousands as they parade FA Women’s Championship trophy

FA Women’s Championship title winners Liverpool are being greeted by thousands as they parade the trophy around the streets of the city this afternoon.

The Merseyside club won promotion back to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League at the second attempt this season. Matt Beard’s side had the league title and promotion wrapped up by early April, beating nearest challengers London City Lionesses to top spot by an 11-point margin.

Liverpool as a club have been heavily criticised for their support for the women’s team in the past but that perception is slowly changing with men’s team manager Jurgen Klopp recently paying tribute to Matt Beard and the women’s team for their achievements. A move towards a more serious ‘one club’ mentality has taken another step forward this afternoon with the men’s and women’s teams parading their trophies around the city together.

While the women’s team won the FA Women’s Championship this season, Liverpool’s men’s team were domestic cup double winners and they also fell narrowly short in the Premier League’s title race and in last night’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final. This afternoon’s joint-parade is a groundbreaking moment for the club and one which the women’s team will hope will further cement them into the Liverpool family.

As expected, the parade has been well supported with thousands of people lining the streets as Beard’s FA Women’s Championship winners enjoy the celebrations that they rightfully deserve.
