PREVIEW: England v Austria

The long wait is finally over, England get their home UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 campaign underway this evening when they take on Austria at a sold-out Old Trafford in Manchester.

The Lionesses are amongst the favourites to win the tournament and Sarina Wiegman’s side will be looking to make an early statement of intent at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ this evening against a hard-working and organised Austrian outfit.

England head coach Wiegman has confirmed that she has a fully-fit 23-player squad available for selection this evening. Defender Lucy Bronze and forward Ellen White are both likely to return to the starting XI following their recent illnesses while Rachel Daly could retain her place in England’s defence. Wiegman is likely to choose from Fran Kirby, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone for an attacking place in the centre of midfield.

Austria arrive in the North West without Maria Plattner and Lisa Kolb who both withdrew from the squad earlier this week. They have been replaced by Virginia Kirchberger and Annabel Schasching. Captain Viktoria Schnaderbeck is fit and ready for selection.

The opening match of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 between England and Austria kicks-off at 8pm. The fixture will be broadcast live on BBC One.
