EURO quarter-finals need top players like Chelsea’s Harder says Danish boss Søndergaard

Denmark head coach Lars Søndergaard says that the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 need top players like Pernille Harder.

The Chelsea forward will hope to help fire Denmark into the last eight when they face Spain in their final group match in Brentford this evening.

Harder holds legendary status just down the road at Chelsea and national team boss Søndergaard believes that it would be a real pity if his top player doesn’t have the chance to shine in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 quarter-finals.

“I think for the knockout stages of the EUROs, it would be very good to have the best players there and she is one of them,” Søndergaard told FAWSL Full-Time when speaking in the pre-match press conference.

“We didn’t take part in the World Cup in 2019 which was a shame because you miss out on players of her quality.

“If we do not qualify for the next stage, I think it would also be a pity that we are not there, not just Pernille.”

Should Denmark qualify for the knockout stages, they will face England in the quarter-finals in Brighton on Wednesday. Søndergaard went on to say that his side would like the challenge of taking on the Lionesses.

He said “We would very much like to take on England and I think we could put in a good performance. They are a good team, they have good individuals and as the hosts, they are one of the favourites for the championship.

“We would love to play England but right now, we are focusing on a big hurdle in Spain.”

Denmark’s final group stage match against Spain at the Brentford Community Stadium kicks-off at 8pm.
