England forward Alessia Russo says that there is nothing better than representing the Lionesses in a UEFA Women’s EURO final at Wembley.
Russo netted the third goal in England’s 4-0 semi-final victory over Sweden at Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Tuesday evening, a result which saw the Lionesses set up a final against Germany at the national stadium on Sunday.
When speaking in the latest broadcast of Lionesses Live, Russo said that there is nothing better than playing at Wembley in the final of a home UEFA Women’s EURO.
“I don’t think it gets much better,” Russo said. “The final at Wembley is what it’s all about. The journey with these girls since aged 11 or 12….I don’t think we ever thought about it happening the way it has.”
The Lionesses have never been so popular with Sarina Wiegman’s side winning the hearts of the nation. Russo went on to express her delight that the younger generation will be able to experience watching England in a UEFA Women’s EURO final.
She said “It’s crazy to think all these young girls are getting to see this on the big stage, I would have dreamed of that.
“All the access and media is amazing. We are just normal girls really but to see what we’re doing to the nation is really exciting.”
Russo’s cheeky back-heel stole the show in England’s semi-final victory over Sweden with her goal going viral. The player said that scoring such a wonderful goal has not yet sunk in.
“I still don’t know what was going through my head,” the forward said. “It’s been a crazy few days with it all. It just happened, it was great, and it was unreal.
“I definitely should have scored the first goal but I’m glad it hit the back of the net eventually.”
