Forward Ellen White says that she was overwhelmed with emotion as England secured their place at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final and she is thrilled that this special group of Lionesses got their reward.
England qualified for the final with a stunning 4-0 victory over a Sweden side ranked second-best in the world and best in Europe at Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Tuesday evening. After a sticky start, Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby all netted as the Lionesses eventually eased into Sunday’s final.
When speaking on the latest edition of Lionesses Live, forward White said that she is absolutely thrilled that this special team got what they deserved, a place in the final.
“I can’t believe it – it’s crazy,” White said. “I think it’ll take a couple of days to sink in. It’s just amazing, so amazing.
“As soon as the final whistle went, I burst into tears. I had to be held by our doctor, cradled by our doctor. I just wanted it so much for this team because this team is so special.
“I’ve been lucky enough to go to many tournaments but this group is so special. It was a lot of emotion but just happy emotion at the same time.”
Around 11 million people watched the game on the BBC via live TV and various other platforms. White went on to hail the growth of the women’s game and it’s popularity.
She said “It’s just phenomenal, isn’t it? To have grown up with the game with not a lot of people watching to now have 11 million people watching, it just blows my mind. It just shows how far this game’s going and how special this team is and hopefully, it shows how proud we’re making the nation. We hope we can do it all again on Sunday.”
