England’s EURO heroes to be awarded Freedom of the City of London

England are to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London as a result of their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 success.

The Lionesses defeated Germany 2-1 in the final in-front of a record European Championship crowd of 87,192 at Wembley yesterday. Ella Toone fired England ahead just after the hour mark at the national stadium but Lina Magull soon pulled Germany back level. The game was to be decided in extra-time with Chloe Kelly scrambling home the winner in the second additional period.

The nation partied well into the early hours of this morning as England finally brought home a major trophy 56 years after the men’s side won the FIFA World Cup on home soil by beating the same opponents. Messages of congratulations have come from some of the highest places including Her Majesty The Queen and the Lionesses will now be granted their first honour – Freedom of the City of London for head coach Sarina Wiegman and her entire squad.

The City of London announced the news this morning, confirming that Wiegman and her squad will receive the honour at a special Freedom ceremony in the City later this year.

Following the announcement, Football Association CEO, Mark Bullingham, said “Being awarded the Freedom of the City of London is a huge honour, and it is a much-deserved reward for the Lionesses’ historic achievements this summer.

“The team has captured the nation’s hearts and made us all so proud.

“I would like to thank Lord Mayor Vincent Keaveny and Edward Lord for their nominations, which have recognised the players’ amazing achievements.”

England are continuing their celebrations this lunchtime in a special event at Trafalgar Square.
