Manchester City defender Kerstin Casparij says that she is excited to be facing a top opponent in Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 1 final on Sunday.
The Cityzens secured their place in the tie after defeating Kazakhstani club Tomiris-Turan 6-0 in their semi-final on Thursday evening.
Despite being two of European football’s powerhouses, either Manchester City or Real Madrid will exit this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League at the first hurdle. With so much on the line, defender Casparij has admitted that it will be an exciting evening of football in Madrid.
“It’s so exciting, it’s a top game with two top teams,” Casparij said when speaking to Manchester City’s media team. “I think both teams deserve to be in the group stage which makes it extra fun.
“I know the history that the two teams have from the competition last year and we are very eager to come away with a win this time.”
Casparij joined Manchester City after impressing at this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO with The Netherlands and she made her competitive debut for the club on Thursday evening. Speaking about her early days with The Cityzens, the defender hailed the togetherness of what she believes is a very tight-knit Manchester City group.
She said “I have been welcomed into the group, the girls have really took me in. I’ve gone to the beach with some of them and I’ve gone with others into town for coffee.
“It feels like a really tight-knit group, it really feels like a team environment and that’s what I love so much.”
Manchester City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 1 final tie against Real Madrid kicks-off at 8pm on Sunday evening.
