Manchester City and England international forward Ellen White has announced her retirement off the back of the Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 success.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Manchester City this afternoon.

White’s most recent on-field action saw her lift the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 trophy with England in front of more than 87,000 fans at Wembley. The forward started the final as the Lionesses defeated Germany 2-1 after extra-time. White made 113 senior appearances for England while she is the nation’s top scorer with 52 goals.

At club level, White has represented six different clubs. After starting out with Chelsea, the striker played for Leeds Carnegie, Arsenal, Notts County and Birmingham City before joining latest club Manchester City in 2019. White has won both domestic cups with The Cityzens while she has scored 34 goals in 90 games in all competitions for the club.

White ends her career having won 10 major trophies at club level. Her most successful spell came at Arsenal where she won two league titles, two Vitality Women’s FA Cups and three FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cups.

Speaking following White’s retirement announcement, Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor said “Ellen is without doubt an icon of the game, and although her career is now at its end, her efforts have paved the way for so many to flourish in the future.

“She has given so much over the years to the game that she adores, and she leaves it in the strongest place it has ever been, which is testament to her hard work and sacrifices.

“She has been the definition of the consummate professional and I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to work with her over the past two seasons – her name will be written into the history books as an icon of women’s football.

“Whatever her next steps are, on behalf of everyone here at Manchester City, I’d like to express our immense gratitude to her and wish her all the very best for the future.”

Tributes for White have already started to flood in and many more are expected in the coming days.
