West Ham United defender Kirsty Smith says that she is looking to bring experience to the side in the new Barclays Women’s Super League season.
The 28-year-old Scotland international is one of a handful of new players to be brought in by The Hammers’ new manager Paul Konchesky over the summer.
In addition to Smith, West Ham United have added some exciting young players to their squad in the current transfer window along with some players from overseas. When speaking in a recent West Ham United media session, Smith said that she is looking to use her wealth of Barclays Women’s Super League experience to help the team this season.
“Last season, I had a few injuries so my main aim this season is to stay fit and healthy,” Smith said. “Being with a new team, I want to bring as much as I can and some experience as I’m a bit older.
“I’ve had some experience in the WSL so I want to bring that here and contribute to more success.”
West Ham United fans will be excited to see what young players such as Halle Houssein and Alex Hennessy can contribute to the team in the upcoming season. Smith went on to say that she has been really impressed with what the club’s young up and coming stars have shown during the pre-season programme.
She said “All the young players have done brilliantly over pre-season, each week they keep improving. It doesn’t matter what age you are, if you’ve got the talent and the work ethic then you can bring great things to the club.”
Prior to her move to West Ham United, Smith had spent her career playing in Scotland and North West England. Life in London is different but the player is beginning to settle into her new surroundings.
“Obviously, the place in general is completely different,” the defender said. “It was a big move to come all the way down (to London). I think it’s been quite smooth though, it’s a really nice place to be. I couldn’t ask for much more.”
