Barclays Women’s Super League fans will get the opportunity to watch their respective clubs’ Australian stars in action in London next month.
The CommBank Matildas have just announced an international friendly against recently-crowned Women’s African Cup of Nations champions South Africa at a London venue on Saturday 8 October (kick-off 12.30pm). The match comes less than 24 hours after England take on world champions the United States in-front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium.
More than half of the clubs in the Barclays Women’s Super League could be represented in Australia’s latest match on foreign soil. Fans of the English game are likely to get the opportunity to see the likes of Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler and Caitlin Foord in action amongst others. Football Australia are hoping that the October camp will allow them to grow the global appeal of The CommBank Matildas ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. They will also play another friendly in Europe on Tuesday 11 October.
Speaking following this morning’s announcement, Football Australia Chief Executive Officer, James Johnson, said “We have been carefully and deliberately constructing a programme of international friendlies to ensure the team is afforded a diverse range of opponents and playing styles to build together as we continue further down the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 2023.
“This will also be a unique moment to play a “home” match in London and it is a match that can highlight the global appeal of the CommBank Matildas, as well as presenting a unique opportunity for Australians abroad to watch one of the best-loved national teams in action. There are tens of thousands of Australians living in London and we’d love to see them cheering on the green and gold.
“We would like to thank the South African Football Association for their collaboration in securing this historic international friendly.”
Details of the chosen London venue along with ticket arrangements will be announced in due course.
