Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says that she doesn’t expect newly-promoted Liverpool to struggle upon their return to the Barclays Women’s Super League.
The Blues travel to Prenton Park to face Matt Beard’s Reds in their opening match of the 2022/2023 Barclays Women Super League season this evening.
Liverpool had spent two years in the Barclays Women’s Championship before ending their time in the second tier in May. The Merseyside club eased their way to promotion last season while manager Beard has added some real quality to his squad in the summer transfer window.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Chelsea boss Hayes said that she does not think that Liverpool will be contesting a relegation battle this season.
“I think they’ll be more than fine,” Hayes said. “They’ve got an experienced manager who knows the league and you can see from the players that he has brought in that he knows what it takes at this level.
“Liverpool will not struggle, I think they will be very competitive this year.”
Chelsea return to Prenton Park for the first time December 2019 this evening. Hayes went on to say that the club’s trip to Merseyside is something that she will enjoy on a personal level.
She said “I love going back to Liverpool, I studied up there so it’s great, I get to see friends.
“Playing at Prenton Park, it’s a good stadium to go to. Liverpool Women have a top quality surface to play on and with the game where it is at, we need to be playing on the best surface.”
Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 5pm this evening.
