Spurs boss Skinner pleased with positives from back to front against Leicester City

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Rehanne Skinner was taking the positives from all over the pitch after her side battled to a 2-1 victory at Leicester City this afternoon.

The Lilywhites benefitted from the slightest glimpses of the opposition goal while they also played the other side of the game well, defending in numbers with real grit and determination throughout.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, Skinner hailed the defensive effort but she was also pleased with the performances across the pitch.

“We’ve got solid defenders who make very good decisions,” Skinner said. “Collectively, we have always wanted to have the identity of being the hardest working team, really hard to break down and they started off in that way today.

“From back to front, there are real positives across the board. We have just got to keep growing now and building on the platform from today.”

Ashleigh Neville again grabbed the headlines for Spurs with an outrageous goal from more than 35 yards out. With the game deadlocked at 0-0, Neville decided to shoot from miles out, expertly looping the ball over opposition goalkeeper Kirstie Levell and into the top corner of the net. Skinner was impressed by Neville’s improvisation whilst also praising the scorer of the second goal, Drew Spence, for her contribution.

She said “It was unbelievable, it’s a fantastic strike. The positivity and the way that she plays, that’s what she is always about. Whether it is in or out of possession, it is about taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

“She has been presented with a lot of space and she has thought ‘I am going to have a go’. The technique was fantastic and she gets a goal out of it. It just eases things a little bit for us and we grow from there.

“After that, I thought that Drew made a couple of really positive runs into the box that created problems as well and to be then presented with a shot…she is a goalscoring midfielder and everybody knows that. I was delighted for her to get one as well.”

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action again on Saturday when they face Arsenal in a North London Derby at the Emirates Stadium.
