Reading manager Kelly Chambers says that the club are aiming for a good cup run this year.
The Royals begin their involvement in this season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup when Tottenham Hotspur are the visitors to the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Sunday. Reading have a good opportunity to qualify for the knockout stages this year with two lower league opponents also being in their group, those being Coventry United and Southampton.
When speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixture, Chambers said that the club are aiming to exceed last year’s achievements and a cup run comes into that plan.
“For us, we want to do better than we did last year,” Chambers said. “We had a really good run but we tailed off in the second half of last season. We want to keep consistency, keeping consistency in the performance, results to allow us to be better than we were last year.
“There’s no hiding from the fact that we are probably the smallest club in the league with the smallest budget but I think we’ve got good quality to compete in this league. People looking in always think we overachieve and that’s down to the work of the players and staff because they go above and beyond to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to compete in this league.
“We want a good cup run, there is no reason why we can’t, it is just making sure that we shift the mentality. This weekend’s game is about us, concentrating on our performance and making sure that we are better than we were the week before.”
Reading will come up against a very strong Spurs team this weekend but Chambers believes that her side can get a result with patience and focus.
She said “Rehanne (Skinner) has implemented what she has needed to implement, they are defensively strong, defensively organised. We are going to have to be patient with our game in terms of breaking them down but it is a team that we see ourselves in and around.
“The focus all this week has been upon ourselves to make sure that we are correcting the elements that we wanted to correct post-Brighton. We need to keep building on our performance and I’ve said to the girls that if we keep doing that, the results will follow.”
