Manchester United forward Russo withdraws from England squad through injury

Manchester United forward Alessia Russo has withdrawn from the England squad due to an injury.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a media update from The Football Association this afternoon.

Russo was absent from the Manchester United squad as they were defeated on penalty kicks by Aston Villa in the group stage of the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup at The Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It has been confirmed that the player will not link-up with the Lionesses as they prepare for their international friendly double header against the United States and the Czech Republic in the coming week and she will instead remain with her club to receive treatment.

Russo’s injury is not thought to be serious while England boss Sarina Wiegman has opted against calling a replacement player into her squad.

Wiegman’s 23-player England squad arrived at the Lensbury Resort earlier today as they begin preparations for Friday’s sell-out international friendly fixture against world champions, the United States, at Wembley Stadium. Once they have contested that match, England will turn their attentions to another home international friendly against the Czech Republic. The Lionesses will play that match at The Amex Stadium, home of Brighton & Hove Albion, on Tuesday 11 October.
