‘We’re in a good place’ – England progressing but still room for improvement says Wiegman

England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that she is pleased with her side’s development ahead of next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, although there is still some room for improvement.

The Lionesses have beaten the three top-ranked sides in the world during Wiegman’s 13 months in charge. Their latest victory came against world champions, the United States, at Wembley on Friday evening.

England will be ranked amongst the favourites to win next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, however, head coach Wiegman believes that there is work to be done before her side can challenge for the number one spot.

“We have 10 months to go (until the World Cup) but we are in a good place and we are improving,” Wiegman said when speaking ahead of this evening’s international friendly against the Czech Republic in Brighton. “We have to improve to do really well at the World Cup but we are improving our game all of the time.

“We built some confidence at the EUROs and it helps when you beat the USA. We saw some good things in the game (against the USA) and we saw some things that we have to improve which is very exciting. We just keep working hard, improving our game and we have 10 months left to do that.”

England take on latest opponents the Czech Republic at The Amex Stadium in Brighton, the same venue where the Lionesses recorded heroic victories over Norway and Spain at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. Wiegman went on to say that England’s return to Sussex will bring back some cherished memories.

She said “It is really nice to go back there, we have some very good memories and it is a very nice part of England. It is a new game and we hope that the fans will come out and support us again just like they did during and after the EUROs.

“We want to show up again and play a very good game.”

England’s international friendly against the Czech Republic kicks-off at 8pm. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
