Chelsea’s assistant manager Paul Green says that the club will be aiming for a positive result against Paris Saint-Germain this evening.
Two of European football’s heavyweights meet at the Stade Jean-Bouin in the group stage of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. The battle for qualification from Group A will be fierce with Spanish giants Real Madrid having also been drawn into the same group as Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Chelsea’s assistant boss Green said that The Blues will be aiming for a positive result this evening as they look to avoid giving any early advantage to their opponents.
“Of course, we want to get off to a good start, whether that is to win or to get a point,” Green said. “We certainly don’t want to be losing the first game, however, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
“We are aiming to get a positive result, we are coming here to play our game and not just to defend. It is about getting the balance right in these European games but the ultimate aim is to come away with a positive result and that would set us up for next week being at home to Vllaznia.
“Of course, you want to get off to a good start. We are hoping to do that and we are confident of doing that.”
Green and Chelsea are set to begin their seventh UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign and The Blues’ assistant boss went on to discuss the evolution of the competition in recent years.
He said “I think it has evolved and grown, particularly over the last five or six years. There are a lot more top European opponents now and there are a lot more clubs investing in the women’s game than perhaps there were when Emma (Hayes) and I first took over here.
“It’s evolving and developing every year. The competition has changed format and now, to be drawn alongside some other massive football clubs….in our case two years running. We think that could help us further down the line when we are playing against some top opposition.
“If we can find our way through the group, we will be well-equipped for the latter stages in terms of having already played some top opposition in the group stage.
“It is getting more competitive every year and I can see that continuing as the competition moves forward.”
Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage fixture against Paris Saint-Germain kicks-off at 8pm.
