‘When you win it, you want to retain it’ – Manchester City want Conti Cup success says Taylor

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side are keen to retain the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup this season.

The Cityzens defeated Chelsea 3-1 in last season’s final to lift the trophy for the fourth time, a record that can only be bettered by Arsenal.

When speaking in a pre-match interview, Taylor said that being trophy holders drives further success and that Manchester City  are keen to retain the FA Women’s Continental League Cup this season.

“When you win it, you want to retain it, that’s the sign of a really good team,” Taylor said. “Our team will look quite different to the team that we put out in the Conti Cup last year but I think it is a good opportunity for us.

“The confidence that it gives us being successful in this competition over a number of years is nice to have but we have to go out and earn it, we have to do the hard work in the group stage and then look for good fortune and good play in the knockout stages.”

Manchester City begin their participation in this season’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup with a group stage fixture against Blackburn Rovers at The Academy Stadium on Wednesday evening. Taylor went on to say that Manchester City will need to be effective when in possession of the ball.

He said “They (Blackburn Rovers) either play quite aggressive or they drop off, they try to make it difficult and pack the spaces.

“We will have to make sure that we are on our ‘A Game’ in possession, find the spaces and our movement is going to be important as well, whether the threat is in behind from us or whether we are going to have to be really tight technically in between the lines.”

Manchester City’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup fixture against Blackburn Rovers kicks-off at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening. Tickets for the match remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
