Liverpool have moved to the top of their group in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup with a 4-0 victory over Leicester City at The Pirelli Stadium this evening.
Missy Bo Kearns, Rhiannon Roberts, Rachel Furness and Katie Stengel got the goals for The Reds as they eased to victory against The Foxes.
The away team dominated possession in the final third for the majority of the opening exchanges and their efforts were rewarded with just 14 minutes played, Kearns firing the Merseyside club into a deserved lead.
After going behind, Leicester City stepped up the intensity, moving the ball more freely and they had a number of chances to bring the game level. Their best of the opening 30 minutes came when Monique Robinson struck the woodwork from 35 yards.
Despite The Foxes’ best efforts, Liverpool doubled their lead shortly after with Roberts heading home from a Kearns corner to ensure that the visitors remained in control.
Furness then added a third goal just before half-time when her shot from the edge of the box curled beautifully past home keeper Demi Lambourne and into the top corner.
Leicester City had a mountain to climb going into the second half if they were going to take anything from the game. They came out brighter, controlling the ball better and testing Eartha Cumings in the Liverpool goal.
The visitors had to work harder in defence. Leicester City began to press higher, taking their chances in front of goal, however, they were unable to capitalise.
Second half substitute Stengel added her name to the scoresheet with 20 minutes left to play. She dispatched her shot from just outside of the box, watching it sail into the back of the net for her team’s fourth goal of the night.
In a very end-to-end second 45 minutes, both teams should’ve scored with the scoreline not truly reflecting the contest. Moments of quality from the away side set them apart.
The travelling fans, who had embarked on a near-200-mile round trip, were in fine voice for the full 90 minutes as they watched their side collect the victory. Liverpool now top their group with six points and two games left to play while Leicester City slip down to third.
