Durham defender Becky Salicki said that her side deserved to take something from their Barclays Women’s Championship fixture against Crystal Palace yesterday.
The Wildcats were defeated 1-0 at Maiden Castle with Anna Filbey striking the winning goal for the visitors just before the half-time interval. Durham had their chances with Bridget Galloway hitting the bar and Beth Hepple failing to convert a penalty while visitors Crystal Palace also had goalkeeper Fran Kitching to thank with the player in inspired form.
When speaking in the post-match media huddle, Durham defender Salicki expressed her disappointment with the result and suggested that The Wildcats should maybe have even come away from the contest with all three points.
“I thought we deserved more if I’m being honest,” Salicki said. “There’s an element of frustration from us all that we should have got more from it.
“I thought we were dominant for the full 90 minutes and they’d probably agree that we completely dominated for the majority of the game. I don’t think Naoisha (McAloon) had much to do at all.
“I think these ones hurt more than anything when we feel we have dominated the game, we should have got more out of it and we haven’t. I don’t even think that a draw would have been the right result, we deserved to win.
“It is a shame but that’s football and that’s what happens sometimes. We’ve got to pick ourselves up and we’ve got another tough game next weekend.”
Durham defeated top tier giants Manchester United on penalties in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup in midweek and they played some of their best football of the season so far in the first half against Crystal Palace. Salicki believes that things will click for The Wildcats in the coming weeks following their switch from part-time to full-time football over the summer.
She said “We are doing very well for ourselves, there has been a lot of change for us this year going full-time. It is going to take time for us to develop but we are getting there and it will all click eventually. It is starting to click, we can see that things are being built and that performances are getting better every single week.
“This is where it really hurts when we don’t get the result but we’ve got big games coming up every single week, you can’t turn your eyes away from anything. We don’t get too high with the highs and too low with the lows, we will go again.”
Durham return to action on Sunday when Charlton Athletic are the visitors to Maiden Castle.
