Reading manager Kelly Chambers says that the club are not able to set a definitive points target for Barclays Women’s Super League survival this season.
The Royals collected their first points of the campaign last weekend when they came from behind to defeat fellow strugglers Leicester City at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time, Chambers said that her side don’t have a points target for survival this season. She believes that the ongoing development of the league makes it difficult for anyone to determine what is the minimum requirement for survival each season.
“In men’s football, it is probably easier (to predict) because they have had so many seasons to have the process to work it out,” Chambers said. “In the WSL, we haven’t had that many seasons with 12 teams in the league and everyone is still developing so it is hard to determine how many points you will need.
“Are the number of points that you needed last season going to be the same this season? It is hard to say that right now but I know that we are not safe. There is a cluster of teams probably saying the same thing right now.
“It is very early doors but in terms of us, we just have to try and get as many points on the board as possible.”
Looking ahead to Reading’s upcoming fixture against Manchester City, Chambers said that her side’s latest opponents are beginning to click on the back of a summer of change.
She said “They’ve had a few changes but they are starting to settle as a group and they have started to find their feet.
“We know what we are going to face at the weekend, City don’t really change their style of play, they trust their processes, they trust the way that they play. We just have to make sure that we are prepared for that.
“They have got magnificent players in that side and as much as they’ve lost players and they are in a bit of a transitional season, they’ve found their feet and are starting to click as a team, you’ve seen that in their performances in the last few weeks.”
