Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord says that her good early season form for club and country is as a result of her being able to enjoy her football.
The 28-year-old netted a brace for Australia in a 4-0 international friendly victory over Sweden in Melbourne in the early hours of this morning.
Foord has now scored five goals in her last three appearances for The CommBank Matildas while the forward has also found the back of the net on three occasions for her club so far this season.
When speaking in the post-match press conference following this morning’s game, Foord said that she is at her very best when she is able to enjoy her football.
“I’m just enjoying myself at the minute, I’m enjoying my football,” Foord said. “I’ve always known that I’m at my best when I’m enjoying myself.
“We don’t get many opportunities to play on home soil so I just want to enjoy every moment of that and make the most of every opportunity.”
Unlike many of her Arsenal teammates, Foord was in the fortunate position to have a break during the summer. The player feels that she is reaping the rewards of being able to turn off from football for a short period.
When discussing the reasons behind her good form, she said “I just put it down to having an off-season, having time away from the game, having time to refresh and to miss the game a bit. I think that’s what I have needed, there have been so many years going backwards and forwards and not really having that time to settle down and miss the game. Making the move to England has given me the opportunity to do that.
“On top of that, being at a club like Arsenal in the level that I am training in day in, day out and the demand to have to perform otherwise, you’ll be on the bench because there are so many great players. It is that challenge to stay in the team week in, week out.”
Foord could be back in action for Australia again on Tuesday when they face Thailand in an international friendly in Gosford.
