Arsenal defender Williamson back on the training pitch following injury

Arsenal defender Leah Williamson is back on the training pitch after spending several weeks on the sidelines with a foot injury.

The 25-year-old Milton Keynes-born centre-back sustained her injury before the October international break and she has been unavailable for selection ever since.

Williamson is now closing in on a return to the Arsenal side with the club having today provided an encouraging fitness update. The Gunners have posted images of Williamson back on the training pitch on their official club Twitter account, a sign that she is rebuilding her fitness.

The defender has missed Arsenal’s last six matches in all competitions. Despite Williamson’s importance to the team, her absence has not been notable with The Gunners having recorded six wins out of six. Included in that winning sequence is one of Arsenal’s all-time greatest results, a 5-1 victory over European champions Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League’s group stage. The likes of Steph Catley and Lotte Wubben-Moy have really stepped up in the central areas in Williamson’s absence.

In addition to Williamson, Arsenal also have Dutch international Vivianne Miedema back training with the squad following a period of rest.

Arsenal return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Saturday when Manchester United provide the opposition at The Emirates Stadium.
